    The Flying Burrito Brothersザ・フライング・ブリトウ・ブラザーズ

    水と油のような関係にあったロックとカントリーを融合したのは、バーズの『ロデオの恋人達』が全ての始まりであった。ここでキー・パーソンの役割を果たしたグラム・パーソンズがバーズ脱退後に結成したのがフライング・ブリトウ・ブラザーズだ。
    パーソンズは共にバーズを脱退したクリス・ヒルマンと作曲を始め、カントリー・ミュージックに社会的意識や同時代の気分をもち込んだコズミック・アメリカン・ミュージックを創り上げた。そしてアレサ・フランクリンやジェイムス・カーなどのサザン・ソウルをカヴァーし、南部の白人と黒人が交差し生み出したコモン・ストックの美を描き出すと共に、ファズ・ギターやポエトリー・リーディングを大胆に導入し、カントリー・ミュージックを確実に若返らせたといえる。しかし、パーソンズは２枚のアルバムを残し脱退——バンドは存続するがごく平凡なカントリー・ロック・バンドになってしまう。
    パーソンズ在籍時のFBBが後の世代に与えた影響は大きく、イーグルスからエルヴィス・コステロまで——そして、現在のオルタナ・カントリー勢にまでそのスピリットは脈々と受け継がれている。
