    ロンドン郊外のトッテナム出身。サッカー・クラブのメンバーが遠征費を稼ぐために結成したというエピソードもある。
    デビューしたのは62年で、しばらくは鳴かず飛ばずの状態が続くが64年の「Glad All Over」がビートルズの「抱きしめたい」をチャートの１位から引き摺り下ろしたことにより、強力なライバルとして注目を集める。続く「Bits And Pieces」も全英チャート２位まで上昇し、ダンサブルなビートにキャッチーなメロディがのった音楽性は"トッテナム・サウンド"として絶大なる支持を得た。その後はブリティッシュ・インヴェージョンの旗手として米国に進出。よりポップ色を強め、「Because」「Catch If You Can」「Over And Over」などの連続大ヒットを放ちワールド・ワイドな存在に……。しかし時は激動の60年代。フォーク・ロックやサイケデリックなど、次から次へと新しい流行が生まれる中、グループは波に乗ることができずに徐々に失速。結局70年に解散してしまう。
    現在でも、ビートルズやストーンズに較べるとアイドル・グループとみなされることが多いが、良質なポップ・バンドとしては60年代の英国でも一、二を争う存在だったことは間違いないだろう。
