    結成14年目、アルバム11枚目にして手に入れた成功——REOスピードワゴンの大成は、あまりにも遅れてやってきた。長いキャリアのなか、気づかぬ間に型にはまってしまっていたロックンロール・サウンドを心機一転させようと、80年に初のセルフ・プロデュース作『禁じられた夜』を発表。見事、全米１位を獲得する。均整のとれたバンド・アンサンブルから繰り出される、ちょっぴりメランコリックなメロディとハードロックのダイナミズムが溶け込んだナンバー群。パワフルだがマイルドな感触をもつプロダクションによって、きらびやかなサウンドを確立させた。このアルバムからは「キープ・オン・ラヴィング・ユー」「涙のレター」「ドント・レット・ヒム・ゴー」など、数多くのシングル・ヒットが生まれている。
    その後も、アメリカン・ハードロック・バンドの代表格として根強い人気を誇り、コンスタントにヒットを飛ばす。99年には、定評のあるバラード・ナンバーを集めた『Ballads』をリリースし、持ち味のメロディアスな側面を再び印象づけた。
