67年、アルバム『夜明けの口笛吹き』でデビュー。プログレッシヴ・ロックの重鎮として知られる彼らであるが、ガレージ・サイケ・バンドとして、その長いキャリアをスタートさせる。が、２作目の制作途中、すべての曲を手掛けていたリーダーのシド・バレットが、度重なるツアーによる疲労とドラッグの過剰摂取により失踪。プレイできなくなった彼を見て、ベーシストのロジャー・ウォーターズはギタリストとしてデイヴ・ギルモアを加入させようとしていたが、シドはアルバム制作中にグループを脱退、結局デイヴ・ギルモアが参加したアルバム『神秘』を発表する。その後、ウォーターズによってバンドは再建され、世界的なロック・バンドへの道を歩んでゆくことになった。70年代に入り、『原子心母』『おせっかい』『狂気』の歴史的３部作を発表。文学性に富んだ詞世界、クラシック音楽の手法を取り入れた荘厳なサウンドおよび高度な演奏技術。それらを持ち合わせた音楽形態は、キング・クリムゾンやエマーソン・レイク＆パーマーらと共にプログレッシヴ・ロックと呼ばれ、隆盛を誇った。70年代も終盤にさしかかり、かつての盟友たちが解散、ポップ化（大衆化）路線への変更を余儀なくされるなか、大問題作にして大傑作の２枚組長編『ザ・ウォール』を発表。ロジャー・ウォーターズの精神的内面を綴った非常にパーソナルな内容にもかかわらず、1000万枚を超える大ヒットを記録。また、当時ブームタウン・ラッツで人気を博していたボブ・ゲルドフ主演による同名映画も公開され話題を呼んだ。83年、アルバム『ファイナル・カット』にて、その長い歴史に幕をおろすこととなったピンク・フロイド。80年代後半にデイヴ・ギルモアによって再始動し、スタジアム・ツアー、新作発表と精力的に活動しているが、かのロジャー・ウォーターズは不参加となっている。
