エレクトリック・ギターによるボトルネック奏法の第一人者として知られるエルモア・ジェイムスは、単弦奏法に優れ、類稀な才能をもったシンガーでもあった。彼が生み出した画期的なディストーション・サウンドとエネルギーにあふれた太いヴォーカルのコンビネーションは、間違いなくブルースやロックの表現を大きく変化させた。B.B.キングとハウンド・ドッグ・テイラーの二人がエルモアのフォロワーとしては最も有名だが、実のところ彼の影響下にないロック・ギタリストなどほとんど存在しないといっても過言ではない。かつてヘンドリックスはエルモアの名を「最も強い影響を受けた人物」として挙げ、スティーヴィー・レイ・ヴォーンにいたってはサウンドまでそっくりコピーし、彼の「ザ・スカイ・イズ・クライング」をカヴァーしている。さらにヴァン・ヘイレンの「アイス・クリーム・マン」も、もともとは彼の作品だ。また、ジェイムスはロバート・ジョンソン、ハウリン・ウルフ、サニー・ボーイ・ウィリアムソンといった偉大なブルースマンたちと行動を共にした経験ももっている。
