クロウチは72年にデビューを果たし、「ジムに手を出すな」をヒットさせる。さらに翌年、「リロイ・ブラウンは悪い奴」を全米１位に送り込んだことで、人気を決定づけた。——ショート・アフロっぽい髪型と口ヒゲが強烈な印象を放つ容姿とは裏腹に、奏でられる楽曲の数々はナチュラルな響きをもつものばかり。カントリー／R&B／ジャズを取り込みながら、繊細なアルペジオが醸し出すピュアなフォーキー・サウンド。そして、渋みと奥行きをもった伸びやかな声で、そよ風のごとくサラリとつづられる歌世界は温もりに満ちている。
