    Big Bill Broonzyビッグ・ビル・ブルーンジー

    戦前ブルースを代表するシンガー／ギタリスト。30〜40年代に活躍し、シカゴ・ブルースの礎を築いた人物だ。白人受けを狙ったフォークから黒人向けのストレートなブルースまで録音物は数え切れないほどで、イマイチ全体像を把握しきれない。しかし、進取の気性に富み、サックスやトロンボーンを皮切りに、早いうちからエレクトリック・ギターを取り入れるなど、土俗的なカントリー・ブルースをダイナミックなシティ・ブルースに進化させた功績は大きい。
    初録音はシカゴで27年に行われ、30年代にその才能が大きく花開く。叙情性を滲ませた歌声に、卓越したリズム感を活かした鋭角的なギター・ワークで、シティ・ブルースの王者に……。58年に死去するものの、晩年はシカゴ・ブルース・シーンのボスとして若手からも敬愛された。
