大の日本通としても知られる＜Mo'Wax＞レーベル総帥ジェームス・ラヴェルが、日本のヒップホップ黎明期を支えた＜Major Force＞レーベル創設者K.U.D.O.（＝工藤昌之）を迎えて94年に結成したユニットがU.N.K.L.E.である。
95年から97年にかけて、ジョン・スペンサー・ブルース・エクスプロージョン／トータス／カン／バッファロー・ドーターのリミックスを手掛け、K.U.D.O.に代わりDJシャドウが参加した『Psyence Fiction』（98年）では、リチャード・アシュクロフト（ザ・ヴァーヴ）／トム・ヨーク（レディオヘッド）／マイクD（ビースティ・ボーイズ）／ジェイソン・ニューステッド（メタリカ）／クール・G・ラップといった各界のツワモノがゲスト参加。01年には、スコットランド・テクノ・シーンの重鎮Slamとのコラボレーションによるシングル「Narco Tourist」も大きな話題となった。
ジャズ／ロック／ノーザン・ソウル／ヒップホップ／エレクトロ／ブレイクビーツ／ブリープといった広範な音楽趣向と、ストリート・カルチャーに根ざした近未来志向のヴィジュアル・アートを密接にリンクさせながら、それらの雑食性を奇跡的に結実させるラヴェルのプロデュース手腕は圧巻の一言に尽きる。ここに呈示された音楽は、白でも黒でもロックでもダンスでもない得体の知れないものだ。
