    The Theザ・ザ

    ザ・ザの評価を決定づけたのは間違いなく、89年の『Mind Bomb』と93年の『Dusk』であろう。張り詰めた緊張感がリアルに伝わってくるビターなヴォーカル、ダークかつブルージィな色合いをもつ楽曲、その中に投げ放たれた社会的メッセージ……。非大衆的な仕上がりをみせつつも多くの支持を得ることに成功したのは、中心人物であるマット・ジョンソンの「自分を取り巻く絶望的な世界を認識しつつも、希望や愛を望む」——という姿に、リスナーが共感を覚えたからにほかならない。
    ザ・ザはマット・ジョンソンによる１人プロジェクトとして79年に始動し、81年＜４AD＞からソロ名義でアルバムを１枚だけ発表するが、以降はザ・ザとして（途中バンド編成としての活動時もあり）作品を発表している。音楽志向が幅広いことでも知られており、活動初期ではエレクトロニック・サウンドと土着的な民族音楽にアプローチし、後にダンス・ビートや黒人音楽にも歩み寄っていった。——近年では、カントリー・シンガーのハンク・ウイリアムスに捧げたカヴァー・アルバムのリリースが記憶に新しい。
