The Flaming Lipsザ・フレーミング・リップス
90年の独創的なアルバム『イン・ア・プリエスト・ドリヴン・アンビュランス』で彼らは大幅な変貌を遂げた。収録された「アンコンシャスリー・スクリーミン」や「レイニン・ベイビーズ」「マウンテンサイド」などは以前の面影をわずかに残しているが、より鋭くて斬新なネオ・サイケデリック・ギターとミッド・テンポな曲を含んだ、非常にラウドで独特なサウンドに仕上がっている。彼らのソングライティングは明らかに洗練され、簡潔なアレンジとさまざまなコード進行をもつ完成度の高いものとなったのだ。
そして、それに続くアルバム『ヒット・トゥ・デス・イン・ザ・フューチャー・ヘッド』や『トランスミッション・フロム・ザ・サテライト・ハート』でも更なる変化を遂げている。また、ハッピーで大仰な作品となった『イン・ア・プリエスト・ドリヴン・アンビュランス』では余分な音を取り払い、ビーチ・ボーイズのようなサイケデリックなハーモニーに、素朴なギターと美しいオーケストラを加え、徹底的なプロデュース作品に仕上げている。
97年には、４枚のCDを同時に再生すると１つの作品として成り立つという衝撃の問題作『ZAIREEKA』を発表。また、99年にデイヴ・フリッドマン（マーキュリー・レヴ）をプロデューサーに迎えた『ソフト・ブリティン』で新たなポップイズムを構築し、高い評価を受ける。この頃より、ウェイン・コリン（vo&g）の臓物血まみれパフォーマンスも話題を呼び、そのサイケデリックな幽玄性とファンタジーな雰囲気をもったライヴにも注目が集まる。02年にはアルバム『ヨシミ・バトルズ・ザ・ピンク・ロボッツ』をリリース、そして06年リリースのアルバム『神秘主義者との交戦』ではファンクの要素を取り入れるなど、リスナーの予測を遥かに越えるミラクル・ポップ・ワールドを展開させている。
