    70年代初期にデビューした、ジャーマン・メタルの頂点に立つバンド。デビュー時は、白黒ツートーンのフライングVのボディを太股に挟み、胸かきむしる泣きメロを弾きまくる永遠のギター・ヒーロー、マイケル・シェンカーが、兄のルドルフと共に在籍していたことでも有名。
    どうでもいいが、デビュー・アルバムから数枚分の邦題が凄い。『恐怖の蠍団』『電撃の蠍団』『復讐の蠍団』『狂熱の蠍団』『暴虐の蠍団』と来て、78年には遂に『蠍団爆発!!』——本作は中野サンプラザでおこなわれた日本公演の模様を収めたライヴ盤だ。ちなみに"爆発"後は『電獣』とか『禁断の刺青』とか、違うパターンのネーミングに変わっている。
    スラッシュ・メタルに通じる、スピーディで重厚なサウンド。余裕でハイトーンを唄いこなすヴォーカルの実力。そしてドラマチックな曲展開と、湿り気を帯びた陰影のあるメロディは当然のように日本人の琴線にふれまくり、早い時期にブレイクしたが、80年代序盤には更に広いマーケットを意識したスケール感のある音作りに挑戦し、アメリカでも成功を収めた。
    クイーン、ボン・ジョヴィなど多くのアーティストが日本のオーディエンスに感謝の意を示す楽曲を聴かせたが、スコーピオンズは日本公演で何と「荒城の月」を演奏。しかしこれを演奏したことより、クラウス・マイネの日本語の発音が不気味なぐらいハッキリ明瞭だったことの方が衝撃だった。
