    70年代から現在に至るまで第一線で活躍し続けるキング・オブ・ヴァイブス、ロイ・エアーズ。
    40年、ロサンゼルス生まれ。幼少の頃から母親にピアノを学び、大学でも音楽を専攻。母親と共に訪れたライオネル・ハンプトンのコンサートで、２本のマレットをプレゼントされたことをきっかけにプロのヴァイブ奏者を目指したという——うーん、なんともいいエピソードだ。
    もともとチコ・ハミルトン楽団などで腕を磨いたジャズ・ミュージシャンだが、自身のバンド・ユビキティを結成してからはジャズ・ファンク／ディスコ／メロウ・ソウル／フュージョン方面で、「Running Away」「Love Will Bring Us Back Together」「Everybody Loves The Sunshine」「2000 Black」といった名曲を次々と輩出。ディスコにしてはエレガント過ぎるし、ファンクにしてはあまりに都会的——という一番微妙でニッチなポジションを確立しつつ、極上のムードで背後から包み込むような、汗クサくないブラック・ミュージックを展開し続けている。
    80年代後半からのアシッド・ジャズ／レア・グルーヴ／ヒップホップ（←特にN.Y.の）ブームで、再び脚光を浴びたエアーズだが、そのサウンドは現在の最新ナンバーとなんら遜色がない（というか断然こちらのほうが垢抜けている）。——瞬時にして都会の夜気を運び込んでくるような、たまらなくそそられるセクシー・ミュージックはどのアルバムから聴き始めても後悔なしだ。
