    若さと気合いとルックスの良さで駆け抜けたザ・ジャム時代〜都会的でスタイリッシュな香り漂うスタカン（スタイル・カウンシルの愛称）時代〜そしてルーツ・ロックを追求して止まない、男気に満ちたソロ時代——77年のデビューから現在にいたるまで（若干の低迷期はあったが）常に注目の存在であり続ける男、ポール・ウェラー。すべての男女が夢想する、「憧れの男性像」を地でいくような存在である。
    スタカン解散後の91年、シングル「イントゥ・トゥモロー」でソロ・デビュー。だが、セールス面では初めての苦汁を舐めることに。そして翌年、待望の１stソロ・アルバム『ポール・ウェラー』をリリース。スタカン時代と対極をなすような、真摯で無骨なロック・サウンドは徐々にイギリス国民の心を掴んでいき、２ndアルバム『ワイルド・ウッド』で大ブレイク。見事に完全復活を遂げたのだった。また、オアシスやオーシャン・カラー・シーンといった男気系ロック・バンドからの熱いリスペクトもその躍進に美しい華を添えたようである。
    その後も、『スタンリー・ロード』（95年）〜『スタジオ150』（04年）などと歌心に富んだ味わい深いロック・アルバムを続々と発表。ポール・ウェラーはUKロック親分の地位を不動のものとした。
