Metallicaメタリカ
「現世で最もビッグなロック・バンドの一つ」といって過言はないメタリカは、もはやヘヴィ・メタルの範疇で語ることはできないだろう。アルバム『メタリカ』が全世界で 2000万枚以上のセールスを樹立し、ヘヴィ・メタル・バンドとして初のグラミー賞を受賞。以降リリースされたスタジオ・アルバムは全て全米初登場第１位を達成するなど、エピソードにも事欠かない。
メタリカは81年、ジェイムス・ヘッドフィールド（vo&g）とラ−ズ・ウルリッヒ（dr）を中心に結成され、83年にパンクの攻撃性と英国メタルの構成力を兼ね備えたアルバム『キル・エム・オール』でデビューした。大した宣伝活動もしなかったが、このアルバムはたちまち30万枚のセールスを上げている。そして86年、傑作『メタル・マスター』をリリースし、人気を不動のものにする。また、ツアー中にクリフ・バートン（b）が事故死するという突然の悲劇に襲われているが、ニュー・ベーシストにジェイソン・ニューステッドを迎え、バンドは危機を乗り越え、結束を固めていく。その後の『メタル・ジャスティス』（88年）では以前の作品をより緻密にタイトに飛躍させ、天文学的成功をおさめた『メタリカ』（91年）で、他のヘヴィ・メタル・バンドの追随を許さぬ存在となる。『Load』（96年）ではブルースやカントリーなどの要素も取り入れ、シングルではテクノ・ミックスまで披露。「形ではなく、感覚とアティテュ−ドを大切にする」という言葉通り、自らの可能性をさらに押し広げていったのである。さらに、アンプラグドやオーケストラとの共演を果たすなど、彼らの音楽的好奇心はとどまるところを知らない。もはやグルーヴ指向のハードロック・バンドへと成長したメタリカは、レッド・ツェッペリンやピンク・フロイド、U2といったバンドと同格に語られるべき存在といえる。
６年ぶりに発表された03年のアルバム『セイント・アンガー』では一転、「速い／重い／やかましい」オールドスクール・メタリカが大復活。日本含め世界15ヶ国で１位を獲得するという絶大な支持を受け、08年の『デス・マグネティック』ではプロデューサーにリック・ルービンを起用、86年の名作『マスター・オブ・パペッツ』を彷彿とさせるサウンドで古くからのヘヴィメタルファンを狂喜させた。
また時代に先駆け、TVゲームの世界にも進出、CD、デジタルリリースと同時で『デス・マグネティック』全曲をTVゲーム『ギターヒーロー』用に販売し話題となると共に、メタリカの冠付きのゲーム『ギターヒーロー』を2009年に発売予定だ。
