    リアル・タイムではカーティス・メイフィールドの影に隠れがちだったが、レア・グルーヴ〜フリー・ソウル・ムーヴメントの煽りを受けて再評価され、近年脚光を浴び始めた感のあるリロイ・ハトソン。彼はシカゴ・ソウルの立役者であり、またダニー・ハザウェイの友人としても知られる男である。そんな彼を象徴するキャッチ・コピーが、ソロ２作目の『ザ・マン！』に記されている。「ライター／プロデューサー／アーティスト／スーパースター！」と……。
    大学で音楽理論を学んでいただけあり、ナチュラル・フォーやヴォイセス・オブ・イースト・ハーレムらの作品をプロデュース／アレンジし、またダニー・ハザウェイと「ゲットー」「トライン・タイム」を共作するなど、どちらかというと“裏方的マルチ・アーティスト”という側面が彼の持ち味である。それだけにシンガーとしては力量不足なのは明らかなのだが、カーティスが取り上げた「ラヴ・オー・ラヴ」やヴォイセス・オブ・イースト・ハーレムがカヴァーした「クッド・ディス・ビー・ラヴ」はやはり70年代ニュー・ソウル期を代表する名メロウ・グルーヴだ。カーティスのそれとは異なる精緻で洗練されたシカゴ・ソウルが堪能できる。
