    77年、パブ・ロックの英雄ニック・ロウのプロデュースのもと、『マイ・エイム・イズ・トゥルー』でデビューを飾った。ロイ・オービンソン、ザ・バンド、グラム・パーソンズなどアメリカン・ルーツ・ロックのフレイヴァーをパンク／ニュー・ウェイヴ的な文脈のなか表現してみせた、ロック史に燦然と輝く名盤である。また、軽快でありながらもアグレッシヴなあのヴォーカル・スタイルも、我々の心を捉えて放さない要因だろう。その後も、コステロ独自の、知性／アイロニー／ユーモアに満ちあふれた批評眼と豊かな音楽性を源泉に、『グッバイ・クルエル・ワールド』『キング・オブ・アメリカ』『スパイク』『ブルータル・ユース』など、数多くの傑作を世に輩出していった。
