社会的疎外感を引き起こすようなアナログ・シンセ・ポップを生み出していた初期の頃（まだヴィンス・クラークが在籍していた当時。ちなみに彼は脱退後、ヤズー／イレイジャーを結成）から、90年代以降の雄大で革命的なオーケストラ風ポップ・ナンバーに至るまで——デペッシュ・モードは常にメジャー・シーンとクラブ・シーンの両方で成功をおさめてきたグループだ。デイヴ・ガーンの哀しげな低音ヴォーカルが、社会批判／性的衝動／うたかたのロマンス……などを一流の皮肉をこめて、だが至ってセンチメンタルに表現する時——聴き手は、そこにある種の孤独な感情を抱きながらも、とことん心酔させられるのである。
バンドが進化するにつれて、近未来的でクールなシンセ・シンフォニーは、穏やかなメロディと明確なダンス・ビートを共存させ、超俗的な温かさをもつようになっていった。無機質に陥りがちだったデジタル・ミュージックに繊細な感情起伏を吹き込み、それをポップ・ソングとして昇華させた手腕こそが、デペッシュ最大の魅力だろう。
01年には４年ぶりのニュー・アルバム『Exciter』を発表し、イギリス／アメリカ共にトップ・チャートにランクイン。その健在ぶりを見せつけた。
